Mark spent five days in the hospital. His face looked all puffed up like a dead fish on the shore after a few hot days. His right eye didn’t look good at all. Several ribs were broken, but that was no shock the way they kicked at him. And that dumb baseball bat I brought? I blamed that for his broken jaw.

I played dumb with Mom and Dad, and I think their patience with me was growing short. Mom read several passages from the Bible about lying, hoping I’d get the hint.

I had bigger things on my mind. Things like Pete Guthrie and how to fuck that boy up.

I spent those five days with my brain boiling away on a hot plate of rage. Not just at Pete and the boys, but at myself for being useless as tits on a hammer. A goddamn disgrace, that’s what I was. Standing by like a cigar store Injun while my brother got his brains beat out.

Mom rubbed her fingers raw on the edges of the cross she hung around her neck, praying for a miracle. Some good it did. Before the doctors finally let Mark come home, they pulled Mom and Dad aside and told them the eye didn’t make it. It’d be a good two months before a glass one would come in, too.

So my brother came home, one eyeball and three teeth lighter and with a kind of haze around him like he was always only half awake.

Time to right my wrong. For Mark and Lola.
